History and PrinciplesThe rise of Silat Seni Gayong was led by 5 princes from Sulawesi, Riau Islands in te 17th century. These princes were:
The princes had two main missions: 1)to spread the religion of Islam and 2)to defend their monarchy from being overthrown by foreigners from the Riau-Lingga Islands and the Malay Peninsula. Sovereignty and proprieties, With honour, proprieties, culture and way of life, combined with movments passed down from generation to generation. Not for victory but to uphold and protect the truth in Silat Seni Gayong as a heritage for the young. It is upheld as a trust. Silat Seni Gayong is a trust in the form of struggle and preservation of a cultural heritage. It is not just a simple recreational activity. It is important to understand, truly understand what is the objectives of the knowledge of Silat Seni Gayong. Success and failure comes and goes and in some instances simply end in disappointment. The knowledge of Silat Seni Gayong is a heritage that was brought down from our fore-fathers that had fought with all their will and might for our land, our race, and our religion. In other words, their struggle is for truth, not victory. Even though times have changed, the struggle in Silat Seni Gayong has no end. With our beliefs we would endure the pains of life and any obstacle just as those before us did in their struggle in Silat Seni Gayong. Sacrifice and perseverence to Teacher, the Constitution, proprieties is always carried with understanding and with utmost honour. Sacrifice and perseverence is not final even though much has been endured, even after being recognized as a leader. A leader still must abide to the laws and regulations, and must observe it. Devotion to the art for the next generation is of utmost importance. A true leader should avoid all that will tarnish or confuse those who truly seek to learn the art of Silat Seni Gayong.
There are many opinions and understandings about altering some aspects of Silat for the sake of progress based on the personal preferences of certain individuals. There are some who said that old, antiquated stuffs are not sparking interest in the young. Throw away the old-fashioned and put in a new one. With such thinking, Silat is changed to make it more pleasing with movements and patterns that seeks to replace the old ways to make it look nice. 'WHAT IS TRUE IS NICE - BUT WHAT IS NICE - IS NOT NECESSARILY TRUE' Still, we held on to the trust given to us by our Master in line with our oath of loyalty to our late Grandmaster and his representatives to defend the honour and dignity as well as the knowledge in Silat Seni Gayong. And wit the knowledge that is obtained due blessing from God, the prophet, as well as our teachers, we will proceed with honesty and full sincerity. God Willing. 'Like the seed of a jackfruit will grow to become a tree and produce more jackfruits, so it is with the seeds of Gayong will produce the fruits of Gayong and it purity and identity will forever be preserved till the end of time.'
PRINCIPLES
TO AVOID
"Silat knowledge cannot be bought and sold like a commodity" Many have fallen due to wrong intentions and reasons that are in conflict with the ways of Gayong.
We are aware of the situation nowadays where many young children who already has interest to learn silat even though they do not really understand what is the meaning of objective, trust and other things that form the basis of our principles in learning Silat Seni Gayong. And the fact is it is too early for them learn these things. And with that, we hope that all parents understand the need to cooperate with us so as to foster understanding among us and to foster the youngsters with the fundamentals of filial piety and proprieties. In this matter we emphasize to youngsters the importance of filial piety to parents and teachers in puruing knowledge and education. Not only in Silat but even in schooling. What is important is blessings and consent from parent and teachers so that the youngsters remain safe and focused in pursuing knowledge. We have put the effort to accustom youngsters in their pursuit of the knowledge of Silat Seni Gayong by creating new syllabus for them. The syllabus is more towards training for breathing and strength but it is not as dangerous as for the adults' syllabus that requires more serious training and with sharp weapons. Apart from the Annual Grading, the youngster are also given the opportunity to test their talend in competition silat in the form of Forms competition that follows the jurus, langkah, and movements that are of Gayong origin. Stamina plays an important part as well as proprieties, strength, and movements that are well-chereographed. Points given are not based on speed of movements, but it is based on how logical the movements are and the decisiveness of techniques. And not to forget the importance of their uniforms that must portray the Malay Warrior. It is God's right to bestow knowledge on whoever He pleases. We are just humans with desires and needs. Knowledge does not know young or old, rich or poor, or position in society.
What is important is a mind that has the needs and wants in accordance with the knowledge
that it seeks.
Only God the almighty decides what is to be gained by a person seeking knowledge.
Progress is necessary and must be sought, but that doesn't mean that the old and pure must be put aside because they are regarded as old and antiquated. Know the knowledge first through experience and an objective mind. Face all the necessary challenges with patience so as to understand the knowledge and become fond of it. And do everything necessary with a sincere heart. Only then can true knowledge be obtained.
